Pop Quiz: how to find the volume of a cube?
If you said "the length of a page with multiply twice, duh!" You are technically correct, but also wrong.
With TDK's 10-inch-by-10-inch-by-10-inch sound cube, here is the answer: find the slider that goes to 11.
This is no joke. This boombox volume maxes out at 11 (Yes, a reference to this is spinal tap). But all kidding aside, this elegant speaker cube provides some serious sound.
It is not only that the two 5, 25-inch coaxial driver really crank. Or, that it razor sharp quality and separation. Or, that the bass gets impressively aggressive. What does the cube really well, is: to fill a room.
There are four cones, one on each side. Two of them are active drivers and the other two are passive reflectors. Moved with sound in any direction, you never need worry about repositioning of the speaker to improve the audio.
This is not to say, that you are moving this thing won't. On the AC power supply, it runs also on D batteries. We rocked the cube inside and outside. It is not just featherweight (16.6 pounds with batteries), but the comfortable leather handle made it just too dead. There are other small details and little touches that a cube this winner: click the volume control, turning it just like the 70's and 80's Hi-Fi equipment.
Aesthetics aside, the sound cube has more ports than the Riviera: USB (for USB sticks or iPods and iPhones), 3.5 mm audio jack, and an auxiliary audio jack - you - wait for an instrument ?-inch cable. That's right: the cube can be used also as a small, portable amp. Tired Requires 12 D batteries (12!) for portable game. Weak mix between instrument and other sources (for example, cube is great as an amp, but not as a karaoke box). No remote control. Battery cover screws can be removed without a coin or screwdriver. Ports located below: If you move the cube, cable often caught under.
